Something Different| Waistcoat

NYFW is currently the talk of the town.  Although it’s impossible for me to personally experience the wealth of creativity and electrifying atmosphere over there, there’s nothing that advanced technology couldn’t do. In fact, social media is churning out photos and videos like there’s no tomorrow which admittedly overload the sensory system… But really it would be quite silly for brands and personalities not to fully utilise this highly influential event to the best of their abilities. After all NYFW is a ginormous platform for people to show off, shine and make a name for themselves.

A while ago I came across an interview with Grace Mok of Mok Theorem when I was doing some random Youtube searches. That interview which was facilitated by ‘multi-tasker extraordinaire’ Margaret Zhang of Shine by Three managed to transport me a number of years back to a weekend market in Sydney. Mok Theorem (headed by siblings Grace and Gloria) had just started out then and I vaguely remembered a crowd of people showing great interest in their designs. I was one of them and was fortunate enough to snap up the waistcoat below which was quickly selling out.

I still find it unbelievably amazing how that initial step at the markets had propelled the brand to where it is today. The Mok siblings were not professionally trained in fashion. I could not think of anything else but passion, perseverance and faith that had sustained them till this day. How incredibly inspiring! Imagine what the future could look like if we’re all courageous enough to take that leap of faith to fulfil those desires and dreams instead of setting for the present…

I gave this rather formal looking waistcoat a casual twist by pairing it with some jeans, cap and my beloved Vans Lo Pro. Grace was also wearing this piece at the markets but she paired it with leggings, long singlet and flats. I still adore that ensemble that she had on after all these years and I plan to replicate that look one day, with my own little touch of course! Did I also mention how cute and functional those large pockets are?

It’s time to chase after that dream in our hearts, non?

Have a great weekend!
