Mommy Shoes

Simple things have become not so simple anymore but should we give things up because they are inconvenient?

I call those mules my ‘mommy shoes’.

Gone were the days of carefree spontaneity. Nowadays, getting out of the door is one complicated and slightly stressful task, especially when I’m on my own. Going out takes tonnes of planning in advance, having to answer questions like “have I fed the baby”, “does he have a new nappy on”, “is his nappy bag ready to go” etc etc. With a totally dependent little human in tow, I would often reach for my slip-on mules because let’s face it, I don’t really need to have complicated shoe problems (sometimes) that will add minutes to my already tight schedule. Furthermore, there’s only so much that 2 hands could juggle at a time.

I think I was approximately 6 weeks postpartum here and we were trying to figure out the best way to continue shooting photos for this blog. I had just completed my postpartum confinement (click here to read more about it) and mini M had been given his first set of vaccines so I was really enjoying the sweet sound of freedom. In case you’re wondering, I lived like a civilised woman during that confinement period and didn’t succumb to some of the draconian rules that didn’t make sense or suited us. I really enjoyed the nutritious food that was prepared for me and that extra pair of helping hands and honestly wouldn’t want it any other way. Anyhow, I digress. I never really thought through the implications that a tiny human would bring to Girl with Flowers. Having to take mini M with us as we explore various locations is, for the lack of a gentler term tedious. Mr M had mini M strapped to his chest on the ergobaby for the first time while trying to take pictures of me. I remember worrying the whole time about mini M’s comfort and praying that the DSLR wouldn’t land on his head from a series of awkward manoeuvres. I guess what I’m trying to say is that simple things have become not so simple anymore but should we give things up because they are inconvenient? I’m inclined to say no. It totally takes courage to explore new territories but if I ever want to enjoy my freedom, I have got to run with the ‘firsts’ and work my way around things. Many well meaning people might give you their 2 cents which inadvertently discourage you but by the end of the day, we are the ones making decisions for ourselves and we just need to be brave (and sensible) about them because there really isn’t another way out, is there?

On the topic of clothes, I’m finally able to fit into a small portion of my clothes comfortably but more work still needs to be done (argh). If anyone knows how to get rid of that muffin top please let me know.

I’ll be talking about my most important mommy accessory aka pram in my next post. If you’re in the market for one and would like to get the low-down about it, please be sure to come back again!

P.s. Majority of this post was written a while ago when everything still felt pretty fresh. Nowadays I’m more relaxed (with practice) so if you are “brand, brand new” to this mama game, just know that you’ll eventually find a rhythm that works for both you and baby.

Jot down your thoughts!
