Baby Knits

I even joked that my son would be that baby who doesn’t have any handknits from me.
Mini M’s Cardigan Handknit by me. He was around 7 months old here.

When I first started to learn to knit and crochet, I watched plenty of Youtube videos, experimented (and failed) loads and offered to craft for friends and family. I was enthusiastic, eager and had no qualms about spending good money on tools and materials. My hands were constantly at work and I just loved that I could legitimately call myself a ‘maker.’ Don’t you think that that term itself brings with it a certain kind of whimsy (lol)?

Fast forward to the first trimester of pregnancy, I lost all motivation to make things. All I wanted to do was to lie on the couch and do nothing. For months I couldn’t bring myself to make anything at all. I had grand plans but didn’t feel like executing them. I even joked that my son would be that baby who doesn’t have any handknits from me. There also wasn’t too much urgency because he was going to be a Spring baby and knits were technically not indicated for that season.

Just when I was being overdramatic about my knitting rut, that making mojo returned again and had kinda stayed ever since. Nowadays, I almost exclusively knit for mini M for many reasons. Firstly, I love that he’s wearing something one-off and doesn’t yet know how to feel embarrassed. Secondly, his stuff takes way less time than making the adult-sized versions (parents never prioritise themselves haven’t you heard?). Last but not least, due to lesser yarn quantity, it is inexpensive (within the context of the Australian cost of living) to produce garments for him (it is quite enjoyable in fact). Oh, how could I have forgotten that freedom I get to experiment with colours and textures? I could totally go out of my comfort zone if desired.

In this set of photos, mini M is wearing a cotton cardigan that I very quickly whipped up this year. Cotton isn’t my favourite material to work with due to its lack in elasticity but it sure is the best for baby’s sensitive skin. I also love that I could throw it into the washing machine alongside his other things without any worry. By the looks of it, he won’t be able to wear it for too much longer but ah well, the cardi has been great while it lasted!

I’m currently in the process of making something bobbly for him with yarn purchased from a new found favourite yarn shop here in Sydney called Skein Sisters. If you’re a yarnholic like me, I urge you to pay them a visit because it has got to be one of the most beautiful yarn shops around. Just too good for words.

I’ll stop rambling now. I need to start sieving through a whole bunch of photos and plan those upcoming posts.

Hope you have a lovely day!
