The Mommy Uniform

My mommy brain has subconsciously done what’s best to cope with the lack of time and choice.

Do you have a mommy uniform that you reach out for daily? By uniform I don’t mean it in a literal sense but rather an outfit formula that you stick to just so that you don’t have to spend too much time or kill too many brain cells putting something together. Being a mama to a breastfeeding child, I’ve adopted Convenience and access (to food source) are of utmost importance but unfortunately that has limited what I can wear from my own wardrobe as well as from current trends.

My go-to formula this winter? Knitwear + Jeans + Jacket/Coat + Boots. Revolutionary I know.

To be honest, I kinda like and loathe the uniform concept at the same time. I like it because it saves me time and effort but on that note, I don’t like the ‘rigidity’ associated with that word. The word uniform sounds boring and me being me, I’m severely allergic to that word.

Awhile back I read an interesting interview on Atelier Dore about a creative director who wears the same outfit every single work day. I guess the difference is that she’s immersed in a world of creativity and needed to preserve every ounce of energy for that while I’m essentially caring for a baby at home hence being able to express myself through clothes has become more important than ever. Most of the time I wear clothes that make me feel good and put on my face even when I have nowhere to go to. Unnecessary? Trying too hard? Don’t you think mini M deserves to enjoy the best side of me anyway?

Truthfully these outfits were not planned at all. When I looked back at my back-logged photos, I saw similarities and realised that my mommy brain has subconsciously done what’s best to cope with the lack of time and choice. I guess you could also say that I’m staying true to my style. One major thing that has enabled me do that is to have loads of basic, comfortable pieces handy. It has taken me years of editing and paring down to feel semi-happy with what I’ve got so I do believe in putting in the hard yards if you truly want to be at ease with your own personal style. I’m unfortunately pretty trend conscious (though I don’t follow them all) so there’s always a little tug-of-war happening within me when I shop. However ultimately I think it’s that ability to stay grounded to my core principle of dressing (that hunch, that gut-feeling or whatever you may want to call it) that actually helped me navigate my way through body shape and situational changes so that I can still feel like myself through it all.

Um, have I just confused everyone?

Anyhoo, mama or not, I would love to know whether you have a go-to uniform yourself? What about it makes you feel good about it?

Wishing you a wonderful day.
